Five and Arts Council England unveil Five Culture

Five and Arts Council England have launched a new initiative as part of their continuing relationship to engage participation in the arts.

Five Culture follows on from the successful three-year project, Fivearts Cities and is designed to encourage viewers to participate in the additional features planned alongside its forthcoming music projects.

Mad for Music was the first of the on-air series to be launched under the Five Culture initiative, transmitting from Monday, 8th October at 7.25pm on Five and also on the Community Channel.

Mad for Music is a five-part series of short authored films from people who have experienced mental distress. Illustrated with music that has a strong personal connection for them the series demonstrates their very special relationship with music which is also an essential means of expression.

Produced by Media Trust Productions, they follow on from previous two series for Five, Mad for Poetry and Mad for Art.

Online, Five Culture will provide extensive resources and build links with a wide range of organisations to guide people online for extra support.

Five's Controller of Arts, Kim Peat, was upbeat about the new initiative: "With Five Culture we want to give added value to our viewers and direct them to communities, both on and off-line, where they can explore the areas of arts, music and culture in more depth."

Arts Council England Head of Broadcasting, Gill Johnson, said: "Arts Council England has been delighted with the effect of our on-going relationship with Five. In each of the cities the campaign has reached more than five million people in various ways. Our partnership continues to put participation at the heart of its mission and we look forward to engaging more and more people into the arts."
