Barnfield College in Luton has received the go-ahead to take over the running of two underperforming schools.
In April 2006 The Times reported that Barnfield College in Luton would become the first FE college to sponsor an Academy if it succeeded in in taking charge of the two schools as part of a £120 million programme.
Now Halyard High School and South Luton Comprehensive are due to be replaced by Academies, run as part of a federation with the college, making the scheme the largest and most expensive Academy project to date.
The new Academies and the college will have a combined register of more than 33,000 students. The college will spend £4m to sponsor the two Academies which will cost between £25 and £30 million each to build.
Barnfield will take charge of the comprehensives in September this year and they will be replaced with Academies in 2009/10.
