Guardian Unlimited announces major sponsorship deal with British Gas

Guardian Unlimited has launched new Environment, Science and Technology websites, completing the next stage of the phased redevelopment of its award-wining network.

Following the successful launches of the Home and Travel pages, the sites will all have wider grids, with greater emphasis on photography and feature video created by the Guardian's in-house teams. Key word searches have been created and each article will be tagged enabling adverts to be placed next to relevant content.

Two new environment blogs will also be launched, with British Gas confirmed as the sole advertiser as part of a major cross-media deal. 'Climate Change' will have a scientific emphasis, while 'Ethical Living' will focus on consumer issues.

Emily Bell, Director of Digital Content, Guardian News and Media said: "The launch of our improved Environment, Science and Technology sites signals how seriously we are taking environmental and sustainability issues and demonstrates the richness of content that Guardian Unlimited has built up in these core areas. The environment blogs provide much greater opportunities for our users to engage with us and create real communities around the subjects that matter to them. We are pleased that the depth and ambition of these sites have attracted such a sizeable sponsor."

Gearoid Lane, Director of British Gas New Energy said: " British Gas are committed to playing our part in a greener future and to providing ways for our customers to learn how to be more energy efficient. Our cross-media campaign will allow us to engage with people, share knowledge and really raise awareness about the environment and the part British Gas can play in making positive changes.'

The environment blogs will enable users to debate the issues that they feel passionately about with award-winning Guardian journalists. British Gas will review the most interesting environmental issues that arise from the blogs or from their own customer base in a dedicated advertorial column in Guardian Weekend magazine each week.

Guardian Films have also been commissioned to create four seasonal films for British Gas in which households are challenged to improve their energy efficiency following advice from British Gas experts. The films will be hosted on a dedicated microsite, which will also feature the advertorials and a series of competitions inviting readers to win prizes related to saving energy.

At the end of the ten-month campaign, a Guardian A5 guide will be produced drawing on the key issues that arise from the campaign.
