Sponsors seeking glorious media attention can clean up at The Maldon Mud Race
The 'MAD' Maldon Mud Race is probably one of the wackiest, dirtiest, charity events in the UK. It involves at least 180 competitors charging through the bed of the River Blackwater in Maldon, Essex, running along the saltings and returning to the beach covered in the thickest, slimiest, smelliest mud that the Blackwater has to offer. The event has been running since 1974, though under the auspices of the International Lions & Rotary Clubs of Maldon since 2001, and has raised in excess of £140,000 for charity in that time. It's held at the beautiful location of The Promenade Park, Maldon, and the next race will be held at 11:30am on Sunday, 4th January, 2009. Competitors are encouraged to get sponsored, and either 100% of what they raise goes to the Mud Race charities or 50% to the charity of their choosing. The event attracts local, national and international media attention, and has been reported in Europe, the USA, Australia and New Zealand.
