CHIEF SPONSOR OPPORTUNITY FOR CONCERN WORLDWIDE'S PHOTOGRAPHIC PROJECT SHOULD BE SNAPPED UP Following on from the success of Nature's Fury, an exhibition of photographs from the Pakistan earthquake that was shown at the 2006 Mela, Concern Worldwide and the London Mela are furthering their collaborative partnership for 2007. Concern are seeking a chief sponsor for a new project: myAsiaSpace (www.myAsiaSpace.net). myAsiaSpace is a project devised to promote international links and greater understanding between young people in the UK and overseas. Initially, in this pilot phase, the participants will be based in London and Bangladesh. Out of Focus, a project undertaken by the Drik picture agency in Bangladesh, explores images taken by children that address issues such as inequality and exploitation. Images remain a powerful tool of communication and entertainment and this is the medium with which myAsiaSpace will be most concerned. Using camera phones, digital cameras or traditional cameras, myAsiaSpace asks young people aged 14 -16 to capture an image which most encapsulates a part of their life here in London - and upload it to the site. Eight finalists will be chosen by a panel, and those winners will receive digital camera training with an award-winning photojournalist. During the training workshops, photos from the Out of Focus project will be used to stimulate learning and debate about global issues. The finalists then have two days with a camera to snap their final photos. The best of those pictures will be enlarged and shown at the 2007 London Mela, along with a selection of photos from Out of Focus, where an overall London winner will be chosen. Following the premiering of the work at the London Mela there will be opportunities to tour the exhibition to other venues and Melas during 2008. Concern Worldwide is a non-governmental, international, humanitarian organisation working in twenty-nine of the world's least-developed countries on both emergency relief and long term development programmes. The organisation works with the poorest people - often women and children - on a range of projects including health, water and sanitation, agriculture and HIV. The London Mela, first established in 2003 with an initiative from the Mayor of London, is a free, outdoor festival showcasing world class music, dance, and visual arts. It was described by The Independent as one of the most colourful and entertaining events on the country's cultural calendar and has subsequently grown to become one of the most important melas in Europe.
