SAMYO ORCHESTRA COULD PLAY A NOTEWORTHY PART IN SPONSORS' PLANS
Samyo is looking for sponsors to support the development of young musicians trained in Indian classical music. The orchestra is looking for sponsorship support to fund the participation of young musicians and to help to create opportunities for young people to learn music. Samyo was created in 2002 with a grant from Youth Music and is now established as one of nine NYMOs (National Youth Music Organisations) funded by national charity Youth Music. The vision for Samyo was to create performance and development opportunities for young musicians under the age of eighteen, trained in the north and south Indian classical music styles. Members are selected through national auditions held every year and the orchestra is open to talented young musicians between the ages of 10 and 18. Within that age group, Samyo is open to both male and female participants from any ethnic, social or geographical background. The Music ... Samyo is unique in Indian classical music, as it combines musicians and instruments trained in the largely divergent north and south Indian classical styles, an innovation only recently adopted even by professional and world class musicians. The orchestra commissions new pieces regularly, by some of the biggest names in Indian classical music, but also performs from the vast repertoire and improvisation frameworks of traditional music, handed down over generations. The instruments include sitar, Santoor, flute, tabla, Mridangam, violin, veena - and vocals, too. Performances ... Since 2002, Samyo has presented concerts of between twelve and twenty-four members on stage, at venues or festivals including The Lowry, Greater Manchester, QEH, London, Symphony Hall, Birmingham, Peepul Centre, Leicester, British Museum, London, Festival of British Youth Orchestras, Glasgow and Edinburgh, Cadogan Hall (with the National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain), The Sage, Gateshead. Training & Development ... All activities, concerts, rehearsals and workshops are free to participants, and the orchestra holds an annual Summer Retreat for creating new compositions, for team-building, technique work and rehearsals. Samyo members undergo regular rehearsals, but also require support in
personal development, and in 2007 the orchestra is initiating a plan for each musician to develop artistically through tailor-made workshops and individual sessions. Outreach & Education ... To further the work of the orchestra, Samyo needs to reach new areas of the country and to inspire new musicians to join, through workshops and
new performances. It is also developing an education plan to create a new teaching centre, and influence schools and colleges to have an experience of Indian classical music.
