THE PHOTOGRAPHERS' GALLERY REELS OFF DETAILS ABOUT 'THE MED' EXHIBITION
In 2004, 'The Med' will occupy The Photographers' Gallery's entire summer programme.
The exhibition will feature international emerging and established photographers and provide a focus on the area and its contemporary reputation for sun and sand as well as its historical impact and cultural influence. Programmed over July to September 2004, it would provide sponsors with an ideal opportunity to reach the gallery's predominantly young, trendy audience in the heart of London's West End.
Much of Europe's culture was born in the Mediterranean, which since Roman times has been widely regarded as the centre of the art world, and a historic seedbed of creativity and inspiration. The exhibition will not only celebrate the Med's reputation for sun and sand and interesting architecture, but also explore its more controversial issues, such as the huge influx of immigrants from Africa and Eastern Europe into the area and how the Mediterranean is re-defining itself politically as a result.
No photography show has been specifically dedicated to the Mediterranean before, they tell us, and, as this is a subject with which most people are familiar in some way or other, the gallery is expecting 'The Med' to attract extensive media coverage and over 80,000 visitors.
