THIS 'ALARMING' PROJECT FOR THE ELDERLY MAY ATTRACT THE ATTENTION OF SPONSORS
Sponsorship is required urgently for the Peace of Mind Project, which was commissioned by Eden Carers and launched in 2002 as a joint initiative with Eden Community Alarms.
The aim is to support carers by providing an emergency call system, including the supply of fall detectors. Clients are provided with a care alarm and pendant. Many carers are themselves elderly or vulnerable and often neglect their own needs and concentrate on looking after their cared-for.
The alarm provides help and security at the touch of a button, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. A pendant, usually worn around the neck will work in the client's home or garden. When pressed the alarm automatically calls through to the Control Centre, which is answered by highly trained operators who can talk to the client to discover if they need assistance. The fall detector is a small device worn on the waistband, which linking into the alarm can automatically detect if a fall has occurred.
The take up of alarms has greatly exceeded predictions. Over twenty installations were made in the first year, with referrals from professional agencies and also the families themselves. The majority of the referrals were for elderly clients, with a range of illnesses including those with multiple conditions.
