BAFTA announces major sponsors for its new video games awards

BAFTA has announced the names of two major joint sponsors of its 2006 British Academy Video Games Awards, which on October 5th at the Roundhouse will recognise the most innovative, artistic and engaging games of the year.

Nokia N-Gage and PC World are joint sponsors, with Nokia N-Gage also running the one award voted for by the public.

"We are delighted to be sponsoring the British Academy Video Games Awards 2006", commented Simon Etchells, head of strategic marketing for Nokia N-Gage. "We see BAFTA as a cultural reference point for what's great about the entertainment industries. It is a sign of maturity for the gaming industry when our best work can sit proudly alongside that of the film and television industries".

"We are excited by the limitless boundaries of gaming - its immersive nature, its sense of community and shared experiences and its ability to deliver new forms of interactive experience. Our continued commitment to mobile-connected gaming is based on this excitement.”

Tom Guy, software and games trading manager, PC World, was similarly upbeat: “PC World is pleased to see BAFTA focusing its attention on such an important area of the entertainment business and is delighted to be sponsoring the British Academy Video Games Awards. The world of video games entertainment has changed a great deal in recent years with games providing users with a more creative and technically superior experience than ever before. These awards enable us to show our support for the UK industry and in particular give recognition to the artistic, creative and technical talents that are helping to drive this exciting market forward.”

BAFTA, The British Academy of Film and Television Arts is the UK's leading organisation dedicated to the recognition and promotion of excellence in the fields of the moving image. Renowned for its high profile Film and Television Awards ceremonies, the prestigious BAFTA mask has long been seen as a symbol of excellence.
