THE LIVING WELL TRUSTS THAT SPONSORS WILL COME TO THEIR ASSISTANCE
The Living Well Trust is a local registered Christian charity whose work is based on the Raffles local authority housing estate in Carlisle. Its mission statement is taken from the Bible: "So deeply do we care for you, that we are determined to share with you, not only the gospel of God, but also ourselves", 1 Thessalonians 2:8. The Trust is in need of whatever sponsorship support it can muster to continue its charitable work throughout the community.

The Raffles Estate has experienced a very difficult time over a number of years as a result, say the Trust, of a poor housing policy and unsocial behaviour on the part of a tiny minority of tenants, most of whom have been relocated away from the estate. The estate has seen demolition of many houses that became unoccupiable, and this in turn has provided a sense of instability.

The area is one that meets the government's criteria for social deprivation and need and is classified as a key area for Health Action Zone status. Living in an area such as this has significant impact upon the residents and low self-esteem and self-worth are factors that are very evident and which in turn lead to other issues such as drug and alcohol dependency and crime.

The work of the Family Centre, which opened in September 2001 in a converted Co-operative Foodstore, is wide ranging and spans most age groups in the community. It is becoming the focal point for the estate and is often the place used for Community meetings. The aim of the Family Centre is to provide a safe, secure, friendly environment in which pastoral care and practical support can be offered to people, and in which they can rebuild their individual self esteem and self worth.

Twice a week the Trust runs an after school club called Loaves and Fishes, attended by some 60-70 youngsters aged from 3 to 11. Activities include choral singing, bible stories, drama and craft-based activities, with food being served at the end of each session. For the over 14s, the Trust provides the Youth Bus, which offers attractions such as TVs, videos, sound systems, Dreamcast, Playstation - but most importantly a place where young people can feel safe and secure, on two nights of the week in Raffles and once a week in Belle Vue. Young people are only admitted if they are lucid, not under the influence of drink or drugs and treat other young people and youth workers with respect. This project has received great support from the local police service - but extra funding is required urgently to extend the service.

Amongst a range of services provided to adults by the Trust are a Ladies Luncheon, a Ladies Coffee afternoon, parents and toddlers activities and a growing educational programme.
